Maifest in Brenham, Texas, is a beloved tradition that has been celebrated for over a century. This annual event, held on the first weekend in May, is a time for the community to come together and celebrate the arrival of spring while also honoring the town’s rich German heritage.

The history of Maifest in Brenham dates back to 1881, making it the oldest festival in Texas. The event has been held annually, with the exception of several years during World War I and World War II. The festival features a variety of activities, including a parade, junior and senior coronation, and the traditional maypole dance.

One of the highlights of Maifest is the coronation of the junior and senior king and queen. Leading up to the event, the community hosts paper flower making parties to create the beautiful floral decorations for the coronation. These parties are a social event for the ladies in the community, complete with punch, cake, and little tea sandwiches.

I have had the honor of being the senior Maifest queen when I was in high school, and my king Brent and I will be celebrating our 35th anniversary since we reigned over “the court of mystical dreams.” It was an unforgettable experience, and I cherish the memories of that special time.

In the weeks leading up to Maifest, downtown businesses display the coronation attire, and the Brenham Heritage Museum features an exhibit celebrating 134 years of Maifest. These displays showcase the rich history and tradition of the festival, allowing visitors to learn more about the event and its significance to the community.

As Maifest approaches, I encourage everyone to join in the festivities and take part in the traditions that have been cherished for generations. Whether you are making paper flowers for the coronation or simply enjoying the parade and maypole dance, Maifest is a time to come together and celebrate the heritage and history of Brenham, Texas.
